INDOT Continues with Alt Fuels

March 5th, 2012

The Indiana Department of Transportation continues its march toward gaseous fueling, working with compressed natural gas and with propane, for which the infrastructure may be more economically established.

INDOT has converted 528 of its older vehicles to gasoline-propane bi-fuel, and fuels them at a network of more than 100 autogas facilities around the state. Conversions were performed by Impco Automotive (Booth 5465) in Union City, Ind.

More recently, Impco converted new 46 Chevrolet Silverado pickups to gasoline-propane bi-fuel for INDOT, says technical services division director Joe Rudolf.

Most recently, INDOT has secured $640,000 from the U.S. EPA and will be going to bid for 40 dedicated-propane vehicles, medium to heavy duty. The EPA grant will help offset the incremental cost of the conversions as it augments approximately $3.2 million from INDOT for the base vehicles.

“We’re not asking for the farm,” Rudolph told Fleets & Fuels last week. “We’re just asking for a fair amount.”

On the CNG side of gaseous fuels, INDOT operates 19 Kenworth dump trucks with 8.9-liter ISL G engines from Cummins Westport. Currently 16 of the trucks are here in Indianapolis – where they were on hand for snow-plow duty during the Super Bowl – and three are in Evansville. “That’s where the public CNG infrastructure exists, so that’s where the fleet exists,” Rudolph says.

Kenworth is at Booth 3039.

March 5th, 2012

A long-awaited, federally supported project using Indiana dairy-derived biomethane to fuel over-the-road trucks came to fruition here in Indiana last year. Kenworth, via Palmer Truck Leasing, has provided 42 Cummins Westport ISL G-powered Class 8 T440 trucks to take milk from the Fair Oaks Farms dairy south of Gary to processing plants in Indianapolis, Murphysboro, Tenn., and Winchester, Ky.

Clean Energy Fuels has built two compressed natural gas fueling stations to support the dedicated-CNG Kenworths. The first, adjacent to Interstate 65 by the dairy, opened this past September, the second, also on I-65, is in Sellersburg, Ind. just north of Louisville, and is opening now.

By mid-summer, the northern CNG station is expected to be fed directly by biomethane fuel made from the waste of Fair Oaks cows.

“The manure from about 10,000 cows goes into the digester that supplies the biogas for the CNG project,” says Mark Stoermann, Fair Oaks Dairy project boss.

Both stations are operating initially on conventional pipeline gas. Once the Flotech Greenlane (New Zealand) methane purification equipment is online, “We will be able to produce enough gas to power the fueling station here and replace the equivalent amount of gas to what we use in Sellersburg,” Stoermann told Fleets & Fuels last week.

The 42 Kenworth trucks are operated by Ruan Transportation Management Systems.

Kenworth is at Booth 3039. Cummins is at Booth 2101 and Westport Innovations is at Booth 5491. CNG fuel tank arrays for the Fair Oaks T440s were supplied by Agility Fuel Systems using cylinders from suppliers including Lincoln Composites (Booth 5767).

CNG-Powered Kenworth W900S Mixers Help Chicago-based Ozinga Bros. Lower Fuel Costs and Emissions

Drivers Report CNG Trucks Provide Responsive Shifting and Plenty of Power

CHICAGO, Ill., Feb. 2, 2012 — It’s been almost six years since Ozinga Ready Mix Concrete Inc. has replaced the mixer trucks working from its Chinatown Plant near downtown Chicago. So, after careful consideration of the business environment and changing regulations, company officials decided that Kenworth’s compressed natural gas-powered mixers were the best fit.

CNG W900S Mixer

“We looked at what we wanted to accomplish — reduce our country’s dependence on foreign oil, improve our company’s environmental image by cleaning up emissions from our mixers and lower our fuel costs,” said Tim Ozinga, director of corporate communications for Ozinga Ready Mix Concrete. “Since city officials are trying to reduce emissions from trucks that operate in downtown Chicago, we thought placing all of our new CNG trucks in operation there would have the greatest impact.”

That’s why Ozinga bought 13 compressed natural gas-powered Kenworth W900S mixers and assigned them to its ready-mix concrete plant on South Lumber Street and West 22nd Place near the Dan Ryan Expressway. One of the fleet’s W900S mixers was recently featured in the Kenworth Truck Co. booth at this year’s World of Concrete trade show in Las Vegas. The company has plans to install a time-fill fueling station at the Chinatown plant eventually as it replaces more of its diesel-powered mixers with new Kenworth CNG-powered units.

Prototype 12L CNG engine hits the road

Thursday, November 3, 2011 by JD East
 from FleetOwner.com

Paper Transport (PTI) is now testing two tractors equipped with prototype 12L compressed  natural gas (CNG) engines supplied by Cummins.

One engine is installed in a Kenworth and the other in aFreightliner.

“The 12L CNG trucks are an important step forward for us as  we look toward more widespread use of natural gas as a fuel for our trucks,”  Jeff Shefchik, president of Paper Transport, said.

The engines offer horsepower and torque equal to commonly  used Class 8 diesel engines, PTI said. The company said it expects the vehicles  to be used in higher weight applications and environments where hills are  common.

“The full use of CNG trucks had been somewhat limited by the  fact that the 9L engine was all that was available for a 100% CNG power unit,”  Shefchik said. “The 12L’s capability to handle steeper grades will be a nice  feature.”

FAIR OAKS FARMS LEASES 42 CNG-POWERED KENWORTH T440S FROM PACLEASE

Published September 1, 2011

Fair Oaks Farms and Paccar Leasing Co. announced that they have entered into a full-service lease agreement for 42 new Kenworth T440 tractors powered by the Cummins Westport ISL-G compressed natural gas engines.

The trucks, equipped with 6-speed Allison automatic transmissions and extra NG fuel tanks, will haul raw milk from the Fair Oaks Farms dairy facilities in Fair Oaks, Ind., to processing centers in three Midwestern states. The first trucks are expected to be in service in August, with the remaining units going into service in the following weeks.

Fair Oaks Farms is leasing the 42 CNG-powered Kenworth T440s under a full-service lease contract with Palmer PacLease. Palmer, the local PacLease franchise, will handle all of the maintenance on the trucks at an onsite maintenance facility. Ruan Transportation Management Systems, a dedicated contract carrier, will provide logistics expertise and drivers for the 42 milk-hauling trucks.

“PacLease has played a critical role in helping this project get off the ground,” says Mark Stoermann, project manager for Fair Oaks Farms. “By having PacLease handle the maintenance, we can concentrate on delivering 300,000 gallons of milk each day to processing facilities in Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. And we don’t have to commit our capital resources to purchase the trucks.”

Stoermann estimates the 42-unit CNG-powered truck fleet will reduce Fair Oaks Farms’ carbon footprint by displacing more than 1½ million gallons of diesel fuel. The Cummins-Westport CNG-powered engine uses cooled exhaust recirculation with a maintenance-free device that reduces emissions of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide. The combination offers increased power density and thermal efficiency for good throttle response.

Chesapeake Energy Corp. invests in Clean Energy Fuels

Friday, August 5, 2011 by JD East

$150 million gives natural gas infrastructure a boost

The announcement last week that Chesapeake Energy Corp. would be investing $150 million in Clean Energy Fuels is welcomed news to natural gas supporters in this country, particularly in trucking.FleetOwner Logo

The timing of the announcement dovetails with a bipartisan bill introduced in the House of Representatives this spring that would provide significant incentive for the purchase of natural gas vehicles. The “New Alternative Transportation to Give Americans Solutions” Act (HR 1380), dubbed NAT GAS, is intended to provide financial benefits for users of natural gas as a vehicle fuel. This includes tax credits for the purchase of such vehicles, for retrofitting diesel or gasoline vehicles; for the purchase of natural gas; and for the building of fueling stations, including home refueling units.

Palmer Trucks is proud to be on the cutting edge of CNG vehicles in the trucking industry.  Partnering with Cummins-Westport, Agility Fuel Systems, Clean Cities and Kenworth Trucks, Palmer Trucks is supported by the best in the trucking business.  With CNG truck customers of Fair Oaks Farms, Monarch Beverages and INDOT, Palmer Trucks is the most experienced and best equipped truck dealership for your CNG and alternate energy fleets.

Chemistry behind natural gas, carbon emissions

Wednesday, July 20, 2011 by JD East

Kenworth is a leader in alternate energy in the heavy-duty trucking industry.  With several fleets of CNG vehicles on the road, Kenworth's reputation as The World's Best doesn't stop at diesel engines.

With the heightened attention around Kenworth's CNG trucks, lets take a look at one of the many environmental benefits of CNG vs. Diesel.

If you live in a big city, you are probably aware of the concern the US government has for vehicle emissions.  With CNG vehicles, there are virtually NO EMISSIONS!

CNG vs. Diesel
Diagram from http://www.cumminswestport.com/fuels/cng.php

The diagram above shows how few carbon atoms methane has compared to diesel.  Not only this, the carbon:hydrogen atom ratio in methane is almost TWICE that of diesel.

‘Mooving Milk’ — Biomethane CNG in Indiana

MOOVING MILK WITH RENEWABLE CNG

Watch for an announcement soon about the latest-anywhere long-distance CNG fleet, supported by a pair of fueling stations, one of them fed with manure-derived biomethane

Though the cows are black and white, there’s nothing but green when it comes to the innovation and sustainability that Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels, Fair Oaks Farms, New Frontier Holdings, and the U.S. Department of Energy are proving by delivering milk down our highways in cow-manure-powered trucks.

Fair Oaks, IN. (June 14, 2011) — What do you get when you combine a

Midwest governor who is committed to finding real solutions to the nation’s problems, one of the most recognized and innovative dairies in the world, the nation’s top renewable energy technology providers, the support of U.S. Department of Energy, an industry leading logistics provider, and a lot of cow manure? You get the largest long-haul fleet powered by renewable energy in the country, delivering milk to processing plants in three Midwestern states.

With the unwavering support of Governor Mitch Daniels, Fair Oaks Farms has announced the development of a natural-gas-powered milk fleet that will reduce the use of diesel fuel by more than one and a half million gallons of diesel per year by using gas produced from dairy cattle waste. In a process called anaerobic digestion, microorganisms feed on cow manure and produce methane gas, which Fair Oaks Farms traps and processes with technology supplied by UTS Residual Processing using a proven water-based technology with minimal environmental impact. This gas will be piped directly to a fueling station in Fair Oaks for compression and distribution.

Manure to Help Fuel Farm's Trucks- Kenworth's CNG

Monday, July 4, 2011 by JD East

Palmer Trucks provides Fair Oaks Farms with Kenworth's Compressed Natural Gas Trucks

Dairy operation using technology to turn waste into natural gas
Manure

From The Indy Star

Written by Rick Callahan

One of the nation's largest dairy cooperatives plans to tap a plentiful energy source -- manure from the farms' cows -- to power its fleet of milk-delivery trucks.

By early next year, Fair Oaks Farms in Northwest Indiana plans to have 42 new delivery trucks running on compressed natural gas created by harnessing microorganisms to turn the cows' manure into biogas.

Anaerobic digester technology uses bacteria to break down manure in the oxygen-free environment of closed buildings or covered lagoons, producing methane, carbon dioxide and trace gases. Fair Oaks Farms, a marketing cooperative of 10 farms housing about 35,000 cows owned by several families, already operates six digesters, which produce gas to run generators that provide electricity to the farms.

Palmer Trucks is proud to offer Kenworth's Compressed Natural Gas Trucks at our Indiana and Ohio truck dealerships.  Palmer Trucks is also proud to offer service and parts for CNG trucks.
